Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Services Helps American Red Cross

Joyce Bradbury, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Hazleton Chapter, thanks Dean Hilliard, owner of Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Services, for the donation of  heat pump systems for the new Chapter House located at 165 Susquehanna Blvd. in West Hazleton. “ This generous donation made by A C& R Services is truly appreciated,” said Bradbury.  The Hazleton Chapter recently relocated and is sponsoring a Capital Campaign to support the new Chapter House and ensure that needed Red Cross services remain local to support our area residents.

When Dean Hilliard recognized the necessity of a heating/air conditioning system he designed and installed the system with the vital assistance of his employees who donated their time and expertise.  Involved in this community service project that required 181 man-hours included Mark Buhl, Ross “Butch” Hengst, Curt Rollar, Tom Murphy, Gary Ernst, Paul “Chuck" Wojcik, Rich Samler, and Jonathon Riotto.  Lennox Industries, Parsons Insulation, and Meier Supply donated the equipment for the project.

The Red Cross has served the residents of the Hazleton area for more than 85 years and has expanded its programs with population growth and community needs.  The local office offers four major programs: Blood Services, Disaster Assistance, Armed Forces Emergency Services, and Health & Safety Services.  Red Cross Health and Safety services alone over the last ten years has increased dramatically.  In 1992, 628 students were trained in CPR and First Aid.  Last year 7,124 students were trained in those courses.

Five years ago the Board of Directors working as an independent unit recognized the need for a new and larger location for the Red Cross Chapter.  Ray Schneider, Chairman of the Board, said, “The objective was a centrally located office and training facility to meet the needs of the residents of our communities.  And the challenge was a successful Capital Campaign to ensure the viability of our Chapter and to keep Red Cross services local.”

Bradbury said, “ After years of frustration in December, 2001, a dream became a reality and we moved into our new Chapter House in West Hazleton.”  The community has generously supported our Capital Campaign and 60% of the goal has been raised.  One of the leaders of this Campaign has been  Dean Hilliard and Air conditioning and Refrigeration Services.  Bradbury continued, “ The dedication and support of Dean and his employees has been amazing.  They truly are a shining light in what has been a very difficult year.”
